Core trust: Working out with others using the Core Pole.
If you've ever set foot inside a health club, you know the drill.
A bunch of members gather inside a studio for a class, face the mirrors and follow instructor.
While they move in synch, no one typically talks, interacts or works as a team.
All that changes, however, when there is a Core Pole.
This new piece of equipment can transform a typical strength training class into a group effort. And it's been happening for almost two years at the Schaumburg Park District.
When we bought it, nobody really knew what it was about, but now we have a very consistent group, said Jenny Bever, exercise director at the Schaumburg Park District.
The Core Pole itself resembles a maypole with elastic strength-training bands that can attach at different points, and up to 20 people can use it at once.
Bever says the beauty of the pole is that it uses several planes of motion (think attaching the bands at the bottom for bicep curls, or attaching them to the top and doing tricep presses).
It does a huge deal to replicate motions that you do in everyday life and it's probably the most efficient way to train your muscles, Bever says.
The official Core Pole company operates our of Belvidere since 2005 and its president, Larry Cunningham, says people who try a class will get a workout that incorporates strength, cardio and balance training.
Cunningham, a former Bensenville resident, says Core Pole classes are just starting to take off since it's new to fitness buffs.
It's a matter of people seeing it and going after they've seen other people taking the class for two or three years, he says.
Members who get into it, though, can mix team fitness with their individual workouts due to the circular nature of the class and the face-to-face contact.
They can also modify the intensity levels of the bands so all members can work in unison, even if their workouts are different.
I think they feel sort of united as a team without having to feel like Oh my gosh, if I make a mistake I'm letting someone else down, Bever says. They can work together yet independently.
